Hi

During the winter, i changed the water pump on my Discovery 1997. Since
then, I can hear water circulating in the heater from the inside of the
car. Sometimes, I was not even getting half of the normal heat from the
heater and god knows how the Canadian winter is cold. So i went back to
the mechanic who changed my water pump and he told me that I have air
stoked in my cooling system and the only way to get rid of it, is to
leave the expansion tank open till the engine gets hot, then turn on the
heater with maximum heat for 10-15 minutes. I did it several times but
no change. I thought maybe the thermostat is to change and I changed it.
Nothing changed. So now it’s summer time, and when the weather is hot,
sometimes my temperature gage shows a little overheating when stopped
and gets back to normal when I drive. But I have no lick anywhere from
the cooling system. It’s been 10 years that I bought the car and I never
had any problem with the cooling system. Is the water pump that the
dealer sold to me is defect!! To me, it can not be the water pump cause
it’s been more than 8 mounts that it has been changed!! I really don’t
know what to do! Could you help me on this please.

Assuming your discovery is diesel, there are two pugs on the cooling system which should let the excessive air out. Expansion tank cap may not help. The plugs are situtated one on the radiator top lhs corner, other one on the thermostat housing on the frontmost end of an engine head. They are made of plastic, Do not us escrewdriver to open those, use spanner of appropriate size. Do not forget to fill up the fluid. Some thermostates have small valve on the side to let the air bubble out, must bi fitted approptiatly. I cant tell you for shure, but the water pump can be running in opposite direction. It has happened on some engines , not land rover as far as i know. The reson was wrong pump model having rotor working in oppposoite direction. This is a speculation only. Excuse me I do not want to be offensive, could anybody closer give you an advice?

PS

If you ever used "stop leak" type fluids for some reson, then your engine may have somme clooging which can result in veird things.
