Hi Landy.
I believe you answered my Swedish collegue Klas. I saw on SLRK Forum that he had also comminicated with our brothers and sisters in Estonia. Mifgt be that some of us (myself) follow route with other SLRK members some days and other not. Depends on the common route chosen. Myself I abolutely and definetely also want to visit Narva and the hill called, in Swedish, "Barnhemshöjden" or fleely translated into english "Kindergarten hill". There is supposed to have been some heavy fighting there during WWII and I´ve read about the place in memoirs by some Swedes who participated. Do not really know why I want to visit. I guess nothing to see today, but Narva is frequently mentioned in Other Swedish history books so I want to have been there. Anyone know anything about this "Kindergarten hill"?

Regards

Hej Per,

There is a lot of information available through e-space.

some direct links from there:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinimäed_Hills

the hill you are talking about is known as Pargimägi ( or Lastekodumägi and direct translation probably should be Orphanage hill or in swedish as you mentioned)

If I'm not wrong then there was established by Narva Red Cross an Orphanage 1926 for up to 150 children, 1941 by Stalin order all children were deported to Russia and place was destroyed (burned down) before german army came in.

About Sinimäed -Blue Hills and more:
http://www.klint.envir.ee/eng/18.html

About Narva region:
http://tourism.narva.ee/upload/Narva_Tu ... og_ing.pdf

What comes to landscape of this region - known as Virumaa - then it is really beautiful, from great views to sea, mining areas, deep forests, The Russian Orthodox Monastery at Kuremäe etc. Probably enough possibilities to have some soft off-road as well.

sunny regards,

Hi, Per.
If anybody else (knows about this hill, I can contact my friend who had made a documentary about battles in Narva during the WWII. And, conveniently, his wife is familiar with swedish-estonian historical connections. So I hope they can clarify the native name and location of "Barnhemshöjden".

Best,
Indrek

Well, it seems you already got all the essential information and Landy is organizing the proper rout.
Little owerview of the Blue Hills area: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijML8meNOOo starting 4:56. The closest highlight is Barnhemshöjden.
Alas there is no translation in youtube version, in case of interest on this subject, you can get the DVD fitted out with english subtitles while being here.

Thanks a lot for all this input. I did some searches today and now understand there are actually three hills. I also found info about the film "The blue Hills" directed by Raimo Jöerand. I have not booked boat yet but I believe there are thoughts about the ferry Stockholm Tallin leaving Stockholm 17:45 Wednesday 12/5.
Now I will go search for that film on the internet, but I give you my word I will buy a legal copy on site in Estonia.

Living... Personally I have proposed Camping, gives us more freedom to choose. If weather is awful we can always change our minds. I believe Klas and Malin in our club will do the planning tonight. They or I will let you know.

Cheers my new friends.

I doubt you could find an english version of this film from torrents. Estonian version is viewable in youtube.
Part 1 of 6 is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RysUzBEc ... re=related and other parts you will find from sidebar. I would gladley give a original DVD to Landy who would give it to you, but to get it, you should come to Estonia. So, see you in May

I found a torrent, AVI-file in good quality (I do not enjoy YouTube quality) And youre right, no subtitles. No worries. I will invite my mother who is from Finland (now Russia) to translate for me. Is this the film that is based on the "day-book" of a soldier in Wehrmacht/the Estonian Legion?

Yeah, diary and letters of an estonian officer Paul Maitla were the primary source material.

Hi again. Continuing my reading I find Eesti Vabadusvöitluse Muuseum. In your opinion, is it worth a visit? I´m still like a child when it comes to military things. I read there was some debacle regarding a monument which was moved there also(?). Would people be "offended" if one go there? I´asking because I will be a guest in your country, and when I am a guest I try to be polite.

Also, my confusion around the blue hills is now solved. It semms that Tornimägi/Liebhöhe is only referred to as "hill 69,9" in Swedish litterature.

Swedes on the run

Aaaaarrrgh. We should consider establishing a new ferry traffic between our countries. Almost 6.000 SEK. It hurts, but is mainly attributable to my raised vehicle in combination with a Sankey-trailer. (Leaving Stockholm 12/5 17:45. Leaving Tallin 16/5 18:00). Well, well. Never mind I am looking forward to this trip and some Estonian beer. I will really try to meet up with you guys during the weekend. Can you send the details regarding your event so I can find you?

P.S My mothers hearing aid is broken so she could not help me with the language in that film. I would VERY MUCH like to buy a version with english subtitles when in Estonia.

A few questions:
-Is Sillamäe worth a visit (Bunker, previously closed town etc)
-Lagedi museum? -I assume this is the "Eesti Vabadusvöitluse museum"
-Viimsi (Laidoners museum)
-Järva-Jaani (Technical park)
-Jöhvi/Väke-Maarja (Forrest brothers bunkers)
-Tartu (Aviation and KGB museums)
-Tartu (Prayerhouse of the "old-believers")

Other cool sites? Off-road not a problem.
