According to a report in today's India Business Standard, Land Rover and Tata Motors defence and commercial vehicles arm plans on developing an all-new Land Rover platform for the defence sector. The idea being that a new range of modern defence Land Rovers, which could win highly profitable defence contracts in Europe and emerging markets, would offset declining revenue from shrinking retail sales in North America and Europe. Whether this all-new platform will form the base for an additional Land Rover model or a modern Defender still remains to be seen, but any new Land Rover platform designed specifically for the defence sector will most likely start the ball rolling for a new range of Land Rover Defenders.

The argument for developing all-new Defender has been growing stronger and stronger as strict new European safety and emission regulations are expected between 2010 and 2014, and eventually the hundreds of thousands of Defender owners might also be looking to replace their vehicles.
