Independent repairers, suppliers of parts, accessory builders and fitters can no longer use the name Land Rover or its variations in their business names or advertising.
Patent attorneys acting for Jaguar Land Rover have demanded in writing that companies stop using its registered trademarks Range Rover, Freelander, Defender, Rover, Landy, Landie and Landi.
Rob Leimer, the owner of Leimers Land Rovers, said he had received a letter from Spoor & Fisher last week informing him he may no longer use Land Rover in his business name or advertising material.
Weve been operating as Leimers Land Rovers for 40 years. He said they even sold spares to some local Land Rover agents when they did not have them in stock.
If they force us to stop using the name, its going to be detrimental to our business, he said, arguing that clients recognised them by that name.
A manager at Land Rover SA, who did not want to give her name, said the decision to stop independent companies from using parts of the Land Rover name came from the UK.
She referred enquiries to media and communications manager Leslie Sutton, who did not return messages left by the newspaper.
