Brand-new Ingenium engines, full-LED adaptive headlights, off-road cruise control, and up to 68mpg claims for facelifted Range Rover Evoque

Think the Range Rover Evoque is getting a bit long in the tooth, now it’s almost ready to leave nursery? Not wanting to be shown up by the new kid on the block (the Discovery Sport), the baby Range Rover, launched back in 2011, has been given a grown-up makeover for the 2016 model year. That’s for delivery later this year, to you and me.

Although Land Rover seems most excited about the car’s full-LED adaptive headlights, a new technology for the manufacturer, the big game-changer should be Jaguar Land Rover’s all-alloy 2.0-litre Ingenium turbodiesel engine under the bonnet. The new powerplant is claimed to give up to 68mpg and 109g/km CO2 emissions in the 148bhp two-wheel-drive ‘e-Capability’ eD4 Coupe manual; 59mpg and 125g/km CO2 in 178bhp four-wheel-drive TD4 manual variants.

If you don’t mind burning fossil fuels faster, the 237bhp 2.0-litre petrol Si4 engine is still available (36mpg and 181g/km).

The 20-30kg lighter Ingenium turbodiesel engine means the suspension has been revised as a result, with a new front suspension subframe, revised rear suspension bushes and bigger (17in front, 16.5in rear) disc brakes. Both should make the nimble Evoque even more rewarding to drive.

To be fair, those new front and rear lights are pretty cool, giving the Evoque a much fresher face in conjunction with redesigned grilles and more choice of wheels and body colours. As well as being brighter, with a more even light distribution, they also follow the direction of the driver’s steering inputs. They should last longer, and use less energy too.

As we predicted, there’s the new 8in touchscreen from the Discovery Sport, plus revised dials with new dials and supplementary 5in TFT display ahead of the driver.

All-Terrain Progress Control introduced on full-size Range Rovers late last year, Attention Assist Estimation (a system that alerts sleepy drivers at the wheel), and Autonomous Emergency Braking from the Discovery Sport, all now feature on the equipment list.

Look closely and you’ll spot new door cards, higher quality leather, and more choices of mood lighting, but you can also now open the boot without getting your fingers grubby, by waving a mucky welly under the bumper.

The 2016 Range Rover Evoque will debut at the Geneva Motor Show, March 5-15.
