All-new Land Rover Defender: everything we know so far

Postitus Postitas landy »

The new Land Rover Defender will arrive in 2018 and one of the JLR bosses who’s driven it has high hopes

Though the Land Rover Defender went out of production last year, the iconic off-roader isn’t quite dead yet – Land Rover is planning an all-new version of its iconic, boxy 4×4, which will continue to use the legendary Defender name and we could see it for the first time at some point in 2018.

The new Defender project has been discussed openly by Land Rover bosses, but confirmation aside, the company is still fairly coy regarding its upcoming off-roader. Our most recent update came in September last year, when Jaguar Land Rover chief execituve Dr Ralf Speth told us that early development mules have already been driven by company bosses. The JLR boss promises that the new car will be “even more capable” than the old Defender when the going gets tough.

New versions of cult classic cars are never easy – Land Rover has to built a new 4×4 with off-road capability and versatility on par with the brand’s DNA, while ensuring it can still make money on a car likely to sell in small numbers.

• New Land Rover Discovery revealed in Paris

Jaguar Land Rover boss Dr Ralf Speth has admitted that the basic design and engineering work is now settled enough for him to have tried the new Defender. “I have driven test mules already,” he told us last year, “and also tried the car against competitors, in on- and off-road environments. It’s sensational.”

Speth declined to put a timeframe on the Defender’s debut – it’s widely tipped to be 2018 at the earliest – but he said, “It is coming. We are working an authentic successor of the predecessor. I have to say it was one of my saddest moments in my career at Jaguar Land Rover, when we stopped the production line of this vehicle, because I just love it. But we will make a successor to this vehicle and you can be sure it will be even more capable. Nevertheless it will have the DNA of the current car.”

When asked if the Defender could be genuinely profitable – or if Land Rover is considering building it at a slight loss to ‘legitimise’ the brand values that sell thousands of Range Rovers, Evoques and Discovery Sports, Speth said, “The new vehicle, as with all our vehicles, has to make money. It will be a sensational vehicle and I think there will be a lot of demand for it.”

Speth indicated that the Defender will share components with other Land Rovers in a bid to cut costs – and that this will extend to being built alongside other cars. “We’re already doing this now,” he said. “We used the modular architecture and elements of our chassis for weight reduction to make the new Discovery a better-handling car. We will do so also in the future because we always learn.” When asked if the Defender would go down the production line with other models, he replied, “Yes, you can assume that.”
Large Land Rover Defender family planned

Beyond the launch of the basic model, Land Rover is planning to introduce an entire new family of Defenders, and design boss Gerry McGovern has hinted that a performance SVR version of the forthcoming 4×4 could also be on the cards.

Such a car would be developed by Jaguar Land Rover’s newly formed Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division, and would allow the brand to tap into demand in Russia and China for powerful and luxurious rugged off-roaders, currently dominated by the Mercedes G 63 AMG.

It’s also likely that a hardcore off-road Defender SVX will join the range at some stage and we could even see a luxurious SVA version in line with the Range Rover SVAutobiography.

“The beauty of SVO is that it allows you to play. It lets you take vehicles and heighten their essence,” McGovern told Auto Express last year. “We can do that with all of them, whether it’s a Range Rover, Discovery or a Defender.”

The first new Defender isn’t expected to arrive until 2018, and it will spawn a family of at least three individual models. McGovern said: “The Defender is all about durability – that indestructible, durable vehicle which is what a family of Defenders would be.”

Whatever happens, the new Defender will continue Land Rover’s recent move upmarket. “In its core form it can be something that can be quite elemental up to something incredibly luxurious,” said McGovern.

Yet the car will remain a true off-roader. While exact details are still secret, the new Defender is likely to have an aluminium body built on an aluminium chassis. This would give go-anywhere strength with less weight than from a traditional 4×4 steel chassis.

“When you see the new Defender, people will know it’s worthy of carrying the badge,” explained McGovern. “It will be able to do everything it says on the tin.”

Land Rover design boss: Defender fans may not like the 'polarizing' new model
Defending its off-road heritage, but not its looks.
Antti Kautonen
Dec 1st 2017 at 11:25AM

Any renderings of a retro-spirited reborn Land Rover Defender can be shelved, if the words of Land Rover's chief creative officer, Gerry McGovern, can be taken at face value. McGovern said the new Defender's design has been locked in place, and that it will not be a simple retro retread of the vaunted original. Not everyone will like it, according to McGovern. He called it "polarizing."

The upcoming new Defender is slated to be revealed in 2019, and it will have an important role in Jaguar Land Rover's SUV lineup. It is to be as off-road capable as the Defenders that have gone before, but the design will not be limited by its heritage, even though the valued bloodline will be respected.

"I do think it needs to acknowledge the great heritage of Defender in terms of its capabilities, durability and is robustness but not necessarily in terms of its visual quality," said McGovern at the Los Angeles Auto Show, as reported by Drive.com.au.

"I don't think we should be doing a pastiche of what we have been doing before," McGovern said. "If [the loyalists] are expecting a facsimile of the old one with all this new technology, then I don't think they'll be pleased." There is sound reasoning in his sentiments, especially considering the new vehicle should be a standalone product instead of merely doing fan service.

"The reality is the loyalists are loyalists and they love their Defenders, but they probably won't buy a new one because they love the old one. This vehicle will have to appeal to a new generation by virtue of its scale — it will need to sell in much bigger numbers than the original. And in order to get the investment back that's going into it, it will be a global vehicle and it will have to bring more people to the brand," said McGovern, with refreshing honesty.

So, think of it as a British prog rock band releasing new, fresh material instead of just playing a Best Of collection on their stadium tours. As Spinal Tap once put it, "Hope you like our new direction."

The New Land Rover Defender Will Launch In 2018
bunchofcars2 | December 13, 2017 | Land Rover | No Comments

And no, it won’t be reborn as a crossover.
The Paris Auto Show was a big deal for Land Rover because it revealed the all-new Discovery, and we already know the next big debut for the iconic off-roading brand. Autocar has learned from Jaguar Land Rover chief Dr. Ralf Speth that the all-new Defender is set to arrive in 2018. What’s more, Speth confirmed that it’ll be based on the same aluminum architecture as the new Discovery, Range Rover, and Range Rover Sport, and that it won’t be related to the Evoque or the Discovery Sport. Translation: it’s going to be a true off-roader, as it should be.
The design has already been finalized and now engineering and prototype mule testing is about to get underway. Speth stated that “There is no question of the new Defender just being an icon. We are working on the aesthetic successor to the old Defender. The architecture will contain a lot of elements that are different (from other aluminum cars).” A few years ago Land Rover revealed a pair of Defender concepts that garnered something of a love or hate reaction among brand enthusiasts. No word yet whether or not the 2018 Defender will bear a resemblance to those concepts, but our gut feeling is that it won’t.
Chances are Land Rover has opted for an exterior design that’s more true to the original, instead of the rounded and Evoqoue-like concepts. Expect the new Defender to have that tall, upright appearance of the original, only with modern styling cues. It probably won’t have an entirely retro look but it needs to stand apart from the rest of the lineup. More clues to come when the first spy shots arrive.

Why the new Land Rover Defender could be built in Slovakia

https://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/ ... a-14875754" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Why the new Land Rover Defender could be built in Slovakia

Land Rover is currently building a huge factory in Nitra

Jaguar Land Rover goes from strength to strength despite tough trading conditions

Could the new Land Rover Defender be built in Slovakia instead of its spiritual home of Solihull?

With the Coventry car maker poised to unveil an all-new version of the vehicle which got the Land Rover ball rolling 70 years ago, one expert believes the new version will be made in eastern Europe.

Land Rover is currently building a huge factory in Nitra, Slovakia, and recently announced it would be shifting production of its Discovery model there from Solihull.

Production of the Land Rover Defender came to an end at Land Rover’s Lode Lane factory in Solihull in January 2016.

New Defender tipped to be unveiled this year

Land Rover said the iconic model would be replaced and it is thought highly likely it could be unveiled sometime this year - Land Rover’s 70th anniversary year.

There has always been an assumption that the new version would be made in Solihull but there is speculation it could be elsewhere - Land Rover’s new Slovakian factory.

Mike Gould is a former Land Rover employee and now an author, who has written several books on the Land Rover marque.

He is convinced the new Defender will be built in Slovakia rather than Solihull.

“I think that is almost certain and I think some of the stuff Ralf Speth came out with this week, which was obviously heartfelt and genuine, is preparing the way for that,” he said.

“One of the automotive magazines suggested the new Defender is coming off a new platform but I have always understood it is coming off the same platform as the Discovery, so it would make sense to be built in the same place.

Slovakia factory could build 150,000 vehicles a year

“The Slovakia plant has the capacity to produce 150,000 vehicles a year and they are saying it could go up to 300,000.

“Certainly there is the capacity there. It makes perfect sense to put it into Slovakia.

“In addition Solihull is land-locked and Jaguar Land Rover has also talked about it being used to produce electric cars.”

Upsetting traditionalists

The move will no doubt upset some traditionalists, who are eagerly awaiting the new Defender but expecting it to be built in Lode Lane.

Asked whether it might upset people Mike added: “Certainly. There are always the diehards. There will be some people kicking-up about it.

Opinion: Jaguar Land Rover is not bailing out of Britain

“There is a body of people who are looking back all the time but there is a growing number really looking forward to what the new Defender will be like.

“I think there is a degree of acceptance.”

Aimed at a different market

Mike also believes the new Defender will be aimed at a very different market.

Originally designed as a vehicle to kick-start British manufacturing after the Second World War, it was also aimed at farmers and became the agricultural sector’s vehicle of choice for decades.

“I think the new Defender will be aimed at a different market and not the farmers’ market,” he said.

“Farmers are looking at a £20,000 utility vehicle - things like the Ford Ranger or Isuzu D-Max - it won’t be anything like that.

“Land Rover is already trailing the fact it will be a premium vehicle.

Not a cheap farmers' runaround

It will be a serious off-road vehicle that’s tougher than the Discovery but it isn’t going to be a cheap farmers’ runaround - that’s for sure.”

As to when it might be unveiled, Mike believes there is a strong chance Land Rover will show it to the world for the first time at the Paris Motor Show in October.

Jaguar Land Rover to move Discovery production to Slovakia

He said: “As you know they are keeping the lid tight on this one.

“All their major vehicles have been unveiled in Paris.

“There was the Evoque in 2010 and since then there’s been the Range Rover, the Discovery Sport and the Discovery.

It would fit the pattern of major model launches.

“And it’s the 70th anniversary year. If they don’t launch the Defender this year they will come away from their 70th anniversary year with egg on their faces.”

Uus õudus kuubis.
JLR autoinsenerid, kes väitsid, et vana defeka ( sarnase) disiniga autot toota ei saa, siis võiksid vaadata uut Suzuki Jimnit ja G-Mersut. Saab ikka küll, Suzuki uus mudel on külll väga kõrget ootustega vastu võetud ja ilmselt saab sellest suur müügihitt (hind+maastikusuutlikus+disain)

Patriot on mulle tegelikult alati natuke meeldinud. Päriselus on tegemist üllatavalt suure autoga, vähemalt väljast.

Jajah, sai suvel selles masinas tagaistmel sõidetud. Õige valik, kui Defender tundub liiga mugav ja klanitud olevat :)

Aga huvitav mis seda uut "defenderit" viimase otsa RRidest ja Discodest nüüd eristab - kandiline tagauks?
