Tour Novosibirsk – Urumchi (Russia-Mongolia-China)
in five Land Rovers Defender cars

This tour is for those drivers and travelers who understand the feeling of driving through the rocky deserts and can see the challenging hard roads and unique world of Central Asia beyond the simple names of key points of the route. In five Land Rovers the tour participants will go through Altai, Mongolia and China on the way that has never been driven by any car before. In every country they will get acquainted with the cultural traditions of local inhabitants: Kazakhs, Mongols, Jungarians and Chinese. Travelers will cross the high mountains of Mongolian Altai, the legendary Gobi Desert, Tien-Shan and they will visit the famous Turfan depression. A team of skilled professionals, who carried out the motorcar expedition Novosibirsk – Katmandu – Novosibirsk in 2005, will assist the travelers on the way.

Day Itinerary Length
1 Novosibirsk – Kiwi-Lodge
Drive from the Western Siberia depression to the foothills of the Altai. Overnight in the hotel ***. 460 km
2 Kiwi-Lodge – Ak-tru
Drive along the famous Chuysky Tract that was once the main route of Russia – China trade. Going over Seminsky Pass and Chike-Taman Pass in mountains. Overnight in tents. 280 km
3 Ak-tru – Tashanta – Ulgy.
The Chuysky Tract runs across the severe Chuysky steppe and gets into the Kosh-Agach district where compact groups of cattle-breeders – Kazakhs - live. It is the remotest area of the Altai next to the Russian-Mongolian border. After completing all the border-control formalities the travelers come to Mongolia and drive to Ulgy town. Overnight in yurts. 260 km
4 Ulgy - Mankhan
Drive across Mongolia sometimes off-road over rocky deserts and mountain creaks at the altitude up to 3200 meters. On the way an excursion to the small camp of cattle-breeders and acquaintance with the Mongolian culture and traditions. There is a chance to ride on domesticated camels. Overnight in yurts. 380 km
5 Mankhan - Bulgan
Drive over the ridges of Mongolian Altai. Very complicated part of the route in one of the remotest and sparsely populated regions of Mongolia. Overnight in yurts. 300 km
6 Bulgan – Tsinkhe.
Passing the Mongolian – Chinese border. Drive across Jungaria along the frontier of the Gobi desert. Overnight in a hotel ***. 200 km
7 Tsinkhe - Barkel
Drive across the legendary Gobi – one of the most inclement deserts in the world. Significant temperature drops at night and fantastic desert landscapes on the way. Overnight in a hotel ***. 730 km
8 Barkel - Turfan
Drive over Tien-Shan mountains at the altitude of 3400 meters. Overnight in a hotel ***. 400 km
9 Turfan
Excursion to the well-known Turfan depression that is 154 meters below the sea level. Overnight in a hotel ***.
10 Drive Turfan - Urumchi Overnight in a hotel ***. 200 km
11 Flight Urumchi - Novosibirsk.

There are two ways to take part in the tour. The first group drives to Urumchi and flies back to Novosibirsk. The second group flies to Urumchi and drives back to Novosibirsk.
