Land Rover launches production of revised Defender
13th Febuary 2007
A substantially revised new Defender utility model for 2007 rolled off the production line at Solihull this week, the latest update of the model which essentially descends in a direct line from the 4x4 vehicle which began life in 1948. Production of Defender and its predecessors has passed 1.8 million units.
The extension to the long life of the Defender will preserve more than 750 jobs at the Solihull factory. Annual production of Defender has remained consistent at around 25,000 units in recent years, with much of the demand coming from large military and other contract orders, including for example, a recent 900 plus-unit order from the Italian energy distribution company, Ente Nazionale Elettricita.
